The Cold Impact Tests that were performed involved cooling a dumpster lid section to 0°F.
A test fixture (Figure 1) was fabricated. The fixture has four toggle clamps to hold the sample in place and a 1-1/2” diameter tup weight, with a hemispherical surface to impact the sample. The tup weight is dropped from a height of 30”. The test samples are cut from the relatively flat area in the center of the dumpster lids. (Three 6-1/2” X 9-1/2” samples can be cut from each lid.)
Samples cut from new lids were placed in a freezer and “soaked” at the indicated temperature overnight. The next day, they were removed, one at a time, and quickly clamped onto the test fixture and the tup weight was dropped onto the sample. If the sample did not break, weight was added to the tup and the sample was re-tested at a later time to allow the part to re-cool.
